85: Election 2024 – Stephanie Attempts to Talk Dave Off the Ledge
Dave and Stephanie dig into what caused voters to ignore Donald Trump’s felony convictions, indecency, incompetence, narcissism, and dishonesty – and elect him president. This includes a review of the 50-year war waged by the mega-rich and corporations to undermine civility, compassion, equity and rule of law, to elevate the free enterprise system and enrich themselves. The Lewis Powell Memo kicked this into high gear 50 years ago.
They also propose theories about why Dave’s campaign for president failed in its mission to alert the public, media and policymakers to the ecological overshoot emergency.

On the GrowthBusters podcast, we come to terms with the limits to growth, explore the joy of sustainable living, and provide a recovery program from our society’s growth addiction (economic/consumption and population). This podcast is part of the GrowthBusters project to raise awareness of overshoot and end our culture’s obsession with, and pursuit of, growth.
Dave Gardner directed the documentary GrowthBusters: Hooked on Growth, which Stanford Biologist Paul Ehrlich declared “could be the most important film ever made.” Co-host, and self-described “energy nerd,” Stephanie Gardner has degrees in Environmental Studies and Environmental Law & Policy.

I’m surprised you have faith in the Democrats, given their unholy coalition of border-free elites and social extremists. I suggest you forge connections with RFK Jnr now that he’s got some leverage – he is an environmental lawyer. I think he’s probably very much on board with your concerns… and very capable of working with a wide variety of people.

By accusing Planned Parenthood of being an overpopulation group, RFKjr revealed himself to be pronatalist and therefore a fundamental opponent. Trump will likely bring peace to low fertility Donetsk though, and abortion rights to Gaza as in Golan faster than Harris would have.

Ballotpedia shows there are hundreds of people running for president in order to be heard, either there opinions or just their names and faces or both. The vast majority don’t succeed so there is no reason to think you would either. Also most people know what overshoot is, it’s just that over half don’t believe it and another third will blame races other than their own, and by extension immigrants, not parents like yourself.

You were right the first time to run for mayor, not president, but you picked the wrong town. Of course picking any other town would require you to relocate, but that is what we must do since antinatalists are a minority in every town, we must concentrate our forces.
City abortion funding saves city school tax, so much so that cities can then fund country abortions as well, all without answering to country voters.
In this way, my guess is that 10 cities can cover the USA and 25 can cover the world, coordinating via the World Council of Mayors and ignoring state and national governments completely. Think globally act locally.

What made you change your mind about running that you didn’t know when you decided to run? Trump was already the likely GOP nominee, though Harris is far better than Biden because she said “reduce population” and is childless, where Biden didn’t and isn’t. So far you are sounding like Trump is worse than expected, but he isn’t since we expected him to be bad, The only surprise was that Harris was better than the expected Biden, but that doesn’t sound like the reason you flip flopped on running; and flip flopping is very annoying.

Harris is childless and you’re not, so how does that make you more of an overpopulation candidate than she is? lip service? I actually think her childless status goes farther than your words in my book. Also, it is easy enough for minor candidates to avoid the swing states and not be spoilers; though it’s far easier for mayoral candidates than for presidential ones, which is why you should act locally.

Thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. It did me a lot of good to hear your take (you and Stephanie) on the election outcome–your views reflect what I’m thinking and how I’m feeling about the election. It will take time for many of us to recover from the shock of the realization of the new American culture that seems to be arising–a more divisive, materialistic, and selfish culture for sure. But let’s catch our breath, and keep on the road to a better world. Your podcast is a light shining in the darkness and we need as much light as possible, so please continue doing what you’re doing with the podcast–providing information based on verifiable facts and science as well as sharing your thought-provoking opinions and life experience. I get so much from your podcast and recommendations for further reading that I made a donation to The GrowthBusters as soon as I finished listening to your podcast. I want to vote with my dollars to support you and others like you who are trying to call out what the real issues are. Thank you for all you do–keep it coming!
